Design: Shaft Design

Wednesday, May 13, 2009
The shaft design inside the Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design cover at Chapter 6.
Shaft design is very important because:

1. Shaft must have adequate torsional strength to

transmit torque and not be over stressed.

2. Shafts are mounted in bearings and transmit power

through devices such as gears, pulleys, cams and

clutches.

3.Components such as gears are mounted on shafts

using keys

4. Shaft must sustain a combination of bending and torsional loads Design Problems

There are 6 step to do how to choose the correct shaft

Step 1: Calculate the torque on the shaft from power

Step 2: Find the torsional stress in the shaft

Step 3: Calculate the loads coming from gears, belts or chains

Step 4: Calculate the bending moment due to the

acting forces. If necessary combine the forces.

Step 5: Calculate the bending stress in the shaft

Step 6: Combine the bending stress and the torsional Stress.
