Design: Weld Joint (bond joint)

Tuesday, June 2, 2009
The step how to solve the problem of the weld joint (please refer to Shigley's 8th edition book)
1. Get direct shear = Load/ total weld area

2. Find centroid of weld area (
see table 9.1 at Chapter 9 page 466)

3. Get torsional shear

- use unit polar area moment of inertia Ju, by setting the weld throat = I
- See table 9.2 at page 470 Ju formula for nine common weld joint
- once you get Ju,
J= te Ju = 0.707 he Ju
- then torsional shear is

4. Vectorially sum direct and torsional shear
